Mezzanine

A mezzanine is an intermediate floor at height. It doubles the surface area in rooms with high ceilings.

A mezzanine can be used as a bedroom (bed upstairs, living room downstairs) or an office. Transparent railings (glass, cable) are recommended to avoid blocking light.

Mistake: a mezzanine with less than 1.80 m (5.9 ft) of height underneath. The lower space must remain comfortable for living.

You can choose from different materials for your mezzanine structure, such as wood, steel, or concrete. Each material offers advantages in terms of strength, design, and budget.

To properly light your mezzanine, consider installing overhead lighting, such as a ceiling light or recessed spotlights. You can also add wall lights or a pendant light above the living space on the mezzanine.

The dimensions of your mezzanine depend on the size of the room and your space needs. Generally, a mezzanine occupies between 30 and 50% of the room's floor area to maintain a comfortable ceiling height.

To make your mezzanine accessible, you can install a staircase, a fixed ladder, or even a stairlift. The choice of access method will depend on the available space and your needs in terms of ease of use.
